You've mentioned being inspired by Stephen King, have you ever read his nonfiction book On Writing? I have and found it super informative, even though I don't write fiction.

I'm like you in that I also edit as I go and don't usually outline first (although an outline feels necessary for the memoir I want to write).

King has been a HUGE influence on my writing and I've been a big fan of his for years. I've re read On Writing a number of times.

While I don't generally outline, for my Harold and Sallie stories, I've spent considerable time on worldbuilding, mainly for the sake of being consistant with my characters, their background/back stories and the world that I've created to tell my stories about them.
